Really? Did Jesus save us from God?
The thought of Jesus saving us from God would actually be funny if it weren’t for the fact that that the vast majority of the "American" church today believe this is exactly what happened. This is what tradition calls the atonement or more specifically the penal substitution view of the atonement. This view holds that God was extremely angry with the world and the only way to placate His wrath was to pour it out on Jesus. In other words if God couldn’t beat up Jesus He would have had to beat us up.

I don’t know what is worse, the fact that so many American Christians today hold this view or the fact that they are deceived into thinking Christians have always believed this way. The truth is that almost no one believed this until about one thousand years after the death of Christ. If you have been taught that the penal substitution view of the atonement is the most orthodox view to hold you have been lied to.

The resources on this page will show you what the church fathers believed and also give valid Biblical alternatives to what mainstream Christianity is teaching today as “truth”.
